Phillies Madness - Here are the videos that reached the sweet 16

The top three seeds in each region advanced to the sweet 16 on Saturday in PHLY’s tournament of Phillies highlights.

Chase Utley’s “World F***ing Champions” speech continued its Cinderella run as a 12 seed, and Rhys Hoskins’ bat spike upset Cole Hamels’ no-hitter in a rout.

Here are the full results from the round of 32:

    Ashburn Region

1 Bedlam at the Bank 96% – 8 Cliff Lee death stare during ASG intros 4%

2 Stairs rips one into the night 86% – 7 Cliff Lee casual pop-up catch 14%

    3 Victorino 2008 NLDS slam 94% – 6 Milt Thompson robs grand slam 1993 6%

4 Halladay perfect game vs Marlins 90% – 5 Realmuto can run for days 10%

Seeding was set up under the assumption that the 2008 and 1980 World Series final outs would meet in the finals. But if there’s one video that could crash the party, it’s Bedlam at the Bank. I expect it to handle Roy Halladay’s perfect game against the Marlins fairly easily in the upcoming 1-4 matchup, but we shall see.

The 2-3 matchup in this region should really be a close one. Shane Victorino’s 2008 grand slam against CC Sabathia has the advantage of a raucous Citizens Bank Park setting. But that was in the NLDS, while Stairs’ iconic pinch-hit blast took place in the NLCS.

    Roberts Region

    1 1980 World Series win 89% – 9 Howard’s Homers 2006 11%

    2 Chase Utley deke 87% – 7 Eric Bruntlett triple play 13%

    3 Chase Utley gets a nickname 73% – 11 Final out 1983 NLCS 27%

4 Ryan Howard “get me to the plate, boys” 40% – 12 Utley WFCs speech 60%

The 1980 World Series final out will take on Utley’s WFCs speech in the sweet 16. Utley’s speech is having a great run as a 12 seed, but its run probably ends here.

Chase Utley will take on Chase Utley in another fantastic 2-3 matchup. Do you take the incredible deke to first/throw home from the 2008 World Series? Or do you take Harry Kalas dubbing Utley “The Man” in 2006, after Utley scored from second base on a soft infield ground ball? Both are legendary Utley moments, but only one can advance.

    Schmidt Region

1 2008 World Series win 95% – 8 Harper walkoff grand slam vs Cubs 5%

    2 Rollins triple 2007 final game 66% – 7 Morandini unassisted triple play 34%

    3 Victorino 2008 NLCS HR 58% – 6 Stott slam no announcer 42%

    4 Rollins 2009 NLCS double 72% – 12 Phillies clinch division 2007 28%

The 2008 World Series final out is a heavy favorite to win it all. Don’t expect it to face much of a challenge from Jimmy Rollins’ 2009 NLCS double, as incredible as the double was.

Rollins may have better luck in the region’s 2-3 matchup. The clip of J-Roll’s 20th triple of his 2007 MVP season is wrapped up in happy memories of his “team to beat” declaration, Rollins joining the 20-20-20-20 club, and the end of a 14-year postseason drought as the Phillies closed a seven-game deficit with the Mets in the season’s final 17 games.

Victorino’s 2008 NLCS home run against the Dodgers, meanwhile, has always been overshadowed a bit by Stairs’ moonshot in the same inning. But the Victorino blast tied the game and made Stairs’ home run possible. It will be fun to see how it does against the Rollins triple.

    Carlton Region

    1 Mike Schmidt 500th HR 84% – 9 Nola 10 consecutive Ks 16%

    2 Halladay postseason no-hitter 95% – 7 Bryce inside-the-parker and Trea slide 5%

3 Brett Myers NLDS walk 54% – 6 Schwarber moonshot off Darvish 46%

    4 Hamels no-hitter 24% – 5 Rhys bat spike 76%

Mike Schmidt’s 500th career home run looked like the most vulnerable top seed when the field of 64 was set, and it will face its first real challenge in the next round against Rhys Hoskins’ bat spike. Hoskins’ moment destroyed Cole Hamels’ no-hitter. I wasn’t too surprised that Rhys won, but the margin of victory was eye-opening. Given everything that Hamels did for the Phillies and the magic of Hamels throwing a no-no in his final game with the team, 76%-24% is something. Hoskins just might have a shot to knock off Schmidtty.

In the Carlton Region’s other remaining matchup, Doc Halladay’s postseason no-hitter will go up against Brett Myer’s crowd-assisted walk against CC Sabathia. I’m pretty sure how that one will turn out, but you never know. It’s March Madness baby!!!!

Here’s the full sweet 16 bracket. The @PHLY_Phillies twitter account will post the polls on Saturday evening and the @2008philz account will post the videos.
