There’s been plenty of fuss made about the Phillies recently, much of it understandable. The defense has been spotty. The offense’s performance with runners in scoring position has been woeful on a number of occasions. Center field is a sinkhole. Aaron Nola’s control and fastball velocity have both been subpar.
“I think we have to play better,” manager Rob Thomson said before Thursday’s series finale against the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park. “In every aspect of the game.”
A few hours later, the Phillies went out and beat the Giants, 6-4, on the strength of some early offense and a terrific start from Cristopher Sanchez.
