I have been trying to reconcile the statement “we are trying to move up” with “we think 2-8 are very similar”. It certainly seems as though they have a preference for atleast one or two of those tier 2 options.

I am very encouraged by the fact that they say they will draft based on best player available – hopefully, they mean that.

This is a wonky draft. Lots of directions to go in. Assuming Frondell, Desnoyers, and Hagens go 2-5, then the next BPA is Martone. After that, you get a playmaker in O’Brien, and the wildcard in McQueen.

If McQueen is legit healthy or at above 90%, then I wouldn’t be disappointed if the Flyers took a swing with him. Watching Bob get another championship and thinking of Kane, Sharp, Gauthier, Patrick, and the Kings, Blackhawks, and even Blues winning championships with players the Flyers discarded, it would be nice if this team had some luck every now and then.

Discarded? Only Patrick. For the Kings and Blues, our best player(s) became the second and third best players in their respective teams. That’s why they won the cup. We don’t win a cup with Richard’s and Carter without a Kopitar at the top. Now, would we have won with G taking that top spot very quickly? I like to think so as long as we can keep pucks out of players’ eyes.

Yeah, it’s impossible to talk about that core without mentioning the Pronger injury. That had a bigger impact on the team than trading Bob, imo.

I would be very happy with Martone, McQueen or O’Brien in that order – and wouldn’t hate Hagens if the Flyers really think he’s the best of the lot.

The size obsession in hockey circles is baffling to me, so I’m glad that Briere seems to be downplaying its importance this year. After all, his own size (5’9 if you believe the NHL reported figure) didn’t seem to slow him down – especially in the playoffs.
