Awesome stuff Charlie. The insights into some of the shortcomings of the advanced metric is really interesting.

I’m curious if you think the Flyers would be better off just balancing their top 3 lines minutes a bit more? It’s not as if they have clear cut must have 20 minutes a night guys (at least not yet) but they do have a ton of really good depth. Would going into games planning for the top 3 lines to play 16ish minutes and adjust based on play be out of bounds?

Honestly, there is something to this, with the caveat that Tocc goes with the hot hand on a given night (which he has shown he likes to do). The way the lineup is right now “top line” may be better served via more matchup based than names slotted.

I’m all for this. Their greatest strength is solid depth and—I’m hoping that a few of the younger guys punch up into top line production this year—could make it a real headache for teams to match lines.

Is Rick Tocchet capable of demoting a fellow Canadian boy like Konecny to the 2nd line, though?

Why would he not. He has not shown that he favors Canadians. He has also not shown that he disfvours Europeans but its obvious you’ve already made that judgement.

Yes, for sure, why would a coach who relies on the old canadien hockey man club ever over play an aging canadien good old boy…
