The first two days of Philadelphia Flyers training camp were boilerplate practice days. Saturday, however, some the competitive juices really got going, in the form of a full scrimmage.
Well, not quite full — 20 forwards, 12 defensemen and four goalies participated, leaving 21 camp attendees to skate on the secondary rink, far away from the throng of fans that got up early on a Saturday morning to watch the proceedings. But all of the NHL roster locks had their names called for the scrimmage, as did everyone who at least qualified as being on the distant outskirts of the bubble. Given the truncated nature of this year’s training camp, the Flyers coaches didn’t want to waste time on players with no chance of getting NHL action. If you were deemed potentially important to this season, you played.
And while there’s only so much to be gleaned from a scrimmage — head coach Rick Tocchet made sure to point out that for many concepts (including the power play), it truly was Day 1 of camp work — there were plenty of noteworthy takeaways to be made as the Flyers head into their first off-day of camp on Sunday.
