“Rasmus Ristolainen has indeed remade his game to the point where he is a useful defensive defenseman, just as Fletcher believed he could. ”

This doesn’t excuse the price paid to acquire him or the contract he was given. Sure, he is now better than we thought he would be, but it was still a terrible move by Fletcher to trade for him and an even worse move to double down and sign him to a new contract instead of trying to flip him to recover some assets.

In my mind Fletcher will forever be the worst GM in Flyers history.

I mean, the contract is still an overpay and I believe they would have been far better served trading him in 2022 once it was clear Giroux was getting moved and a rebuild was needed.

But it’s undeniable that the Flyers were right that they could get more out of Ristolainen than Buffalo did, as long as he received proper coaching and was given easier minutes.

“In retrospect, there was more good in Fletcher’s tenure than most realized.”

This is the premise that you were supporting when talking about Risto. Just because Risto is no longer a disaster on the ice doesn’t mean that there is anything “good” about the Ristolainen acquisition. It’s just not quite as terrible as we thought it would be, but it was still a really really bad deal to give up a 1st and a 2nd to get him.

I’m not trying to bash you or your writing. You have been my favorite sports writer since Eric T left BSH. I just don’t think you can put enough lipstick on this particular pig (Risto acquisition).
