Lazy writing, relying on innuendo instead of research.

Let’s start with stamina. Building fitness is a multiple month cycle with a greater emphasis on aerobic and anaerobic training – hitting some more in pads or having a slightly longer session for the 2-3 weeks of training camp isn’t going to achieve that goal in any kind of significant way. Conditioning is done in the off-season If anything, the 2-3 weeks of training camp prior to the start of a season would be a taper phase for the offseason cardio/conditioning, not a build/peak phase – which is a perfect time to focus on learning the plays.

Second – your innuendo about “did Hurts logs the reps needed”: that’s a sly, under-handed comment which is impossible to prove wrong, but because of the way the season ended, anything done different sounds appealing because it COULD have changed things. But let’s examine it more closely. Would more practice sessions have helped make the offense more creative? No. Would more practice sessions have improved the talent level of the players in the back 7? No. Would more practice sessions have helped Carter/Davis’s conditioning? No (See above).

Again, look at how things are taught elsewhere – in a LOT of fields involving physical training, the classroom is a great way to understand concepts before applying them in person – as opposed to doing everything in the water. Take scuba instructor training – instructor candidates spend a lot of time in a classroom understanding how to teach different skills and respond to it, and then apply it in the water: they aren’t taught everything from scratch in the field.

The idea of second-guessing EVERYTHING just for the sake of being different is silly. Siriani is spot on: Just because the season ended on such a sour note doesnt mean you change everything – you change the things that led to that failure, and you retain the things that were working.

And if you are going to write an article claiming that the low training load during practice contributed to the failure, it behooves you to do some research and write an article based on hard data, as opposed to innuendo. This is the sort of lazy writing that you see on the Inky and the comments sections of various articles – not what one expects from a site offering premium sports journalism.

Here’s a tip on doing research and becoming informed about the articles for which you speak – go speak to endurance athletes or MMA coaches on how they build up to events. Do some digging and correlate the length/intensity of training camps to results and see if there actually IS some benefit to harder camps.

Write better.
