The Philadelphia Flyers’ top scorer and best player isn’t going anywhere.
The team announced on Thursday afternoon that Travis Konecny — who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025 — agreed to an eight-year, $70 million ($8.75 million cap hit) contract extension with the club that will kick in starting with the 2025-26 campaign. It’s a significant raise over his current $5.5 million cap hit, which will remain in effect through next season, before the new contract begins.
“Travis Konecny is an integral part of the fabric of our team and we are thrilled to have him under contract for the long-term,” Flyers general manager Daniel Briere said in a statement issued with the announcement. “Travis has grown into a significant leader on our team and he truly embodies what it means to be a Flyer. His work-ethic, combined with his tenacity and talent makes him a central figure for what we are building towards, and his determination for our future success speaks volumes about his commitment to our team and city.”
Over the past two seasons, the 26-year old Konecny established himself as the Flyers’ top offensive weapon, leading the team in scoring with 61 points in 60 games in 2022-23, and then again topping the team charts in 2023-24 with 68 points in 76 games. Konecny has also emerged as arguably the league’s top shorthanded threat, leading all NHLers with nine SHGs since the start of the 2022-23 season.
Konecny will be 27 years old when the contract begins in the summer of 2025, and the deal is slated to last until 2032-33, when he will be 36 years of age.

Nice they have their playoff-cup-level second line wing locked up at top dollar, and no ability to trade him for 6 years. Now Briere and company have to work on finding their first line center, and another first line wing to go with MM, and figure out how to fit them under the cap, and find them outside the draft, since they will make the playoffs next year and will not have a lottery draft pick for a decade to find those critical first line pieces. Good luck with that task Briere and Jonesy. If the goal is make the playoffs every year, but not be a serious contender for the cup, then this move works nicely.

I can’t imagine why the flyers might be nervous about giving out an 8 year UFA contract with NTC protection to guys that aren’t true stars in this league. It’s not like we’ve had any recent examples where we wished we hadn’t done that within a year or two. Is anyone in the organization even vaguely familiar with how the salary cap system works?
