I suspect that (over)emphasis on ball protection is slowing down Hurts. He has always been a bit slow in the release, but it seems he wants to make sure there is no risk.
Without going back to look at it again, I suspect the TD pass to Calcaterra is an example of an unencumbered Hurts.

Good article, Zach. The lack of production in the passing game is a concern, given the expected ceiling for the team and the caliber of teams they would face in the playoffs. I’m glad that the team realizes this, but with it being so late in the season I hope that they are able to make the necessary adjustments to improve the passing game.

Positing a theory here – could it be that the new kickoff rules have left FG kickers less warmed or prepared to kick FGs? Look at the averages for elite kickers who don’t do kickoffs and now suddenly can’t make an FG. What other league-wide variable can explain this drop in FG %?
