I have seen two arguments for banning the Eagles’ “tush push” short-yardage play, which barely survived a league vote Wednesday when the anti-pushers could muster only 22 of a needed 24 votes.
Those arguments are that it is unsafe, despite a lack of injury data to back up that assertion, and the more nebulous accusation that it somehow affects the “pace of play.” I haven’t even heard a serious attempt to explain that second reason, because, well, what could that possibly mean? That the play takes more time to run than a long pass down the sideline? It doesn’t. Maybe the idea is that sometimes there is a second or two of digging and shoving with no progress visible, before the whistle blows. ...
