The Philadelphia Phillies have officially fired manager Rob Thomson after a disastrous 9-19 start to the 2026 season — their worst 28-game start since 2002. Don Mattingly has been named interim manager as the Phillies look to turn things around.
Thomson took over as Phillies manager in June 2022 when Joe Girardi was let go, and went on to lead the team to four straight playoff appearances and two NL East division titles. But a brutal 10-game losing streak and a roster that fell 10 games below .500 for the first time since 2017 forced the organization’s hand. Despite a $317 million payroll and World Series expectations, the Phillies found themselves battling for last place in the NL East.
