EJ, first of all, I’m a fan, have been a reader for years.
I listened to the chats a day later, while I walk, which gives me no chance to comment.
On Tuesday, you paraphrased Patullo as “trying not to lose.” In my opinion (I’m 83, so I have my share of opinions), having coached some, having had kids compete (lettering in gymnastics, UC Berkely), playing not to lose is an almost guaranteed way to lose, akin to playing scared.
Comparing this team’s early results to last year’s slow 2-2 start doesn’t make me feel good. In 2023, they were 10-1 (before the collapse), and at the time, I couldn’t figure out how they got to be 10-1. This season so far feels more like `23 than `24. The Dallas game hinged on the fumble/recovery, the KC game on Kelce’s bobble leading to an INT. Another play, a pass to a wide-open receiver, was overthrown by the usually on-the-money Mahomes.
This team has been lucky.
I read Fran (what an asset to PHLY) and saw three or four receivers covered by a six-man shell (great job by KC), but that leaves seven Eagles covered by five KC defenders at the LOS. We have the best OL, two running threats (one the best RB), why doesn’t the run work? And given those assets, why no play-action?
I’m not a negaPhiladelphian complaining about being 2-0, in fact, I was relaxed throughout the game, confident in this team, and I understood that Patullo doesn’t operate by himself (a very good, illuminating comment) but this offense, with this talent, is a tremendous concern.
