Don’t they have to get under the cap limit for day 1 of the season before they can place anyone on LTIR, though?

Looks like they can put someone in LTIR in the offseason and during pre-season
“Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

At the start of the season the teams LTIR relief & ACSL is recalculated when the 10% cushion is removed.”

They can use LTIR in the offseason. The big thing with Day 1 of the season is getting as theoretically close to the cap ceiling before tapping into LTIR to maximize allowance.

I dug into this to make sure I’m not crazy, LTIR in the offseason only got reinterpreted as allowable in 2017. Fun league!

I see no reason for Erik Johnson to be back. That role should be for more of an AHL vet(Belpedio) on a minimum contract. I know the cap saved isn’t much between those salaries but why waste it.
