Charlie,
I have a question. I visited development camp a couple of times and why do the goalies not have the name plate on the backs of their jerseys?

I am very meh on York. Yes, his advanced metrics looked good but they did so for most of the team. The structure they played in likely had a lot to do with it.
$5MM for him is fine. He’s a good middle of the lineup player but by no means a core part of a contender, IMO. So Briere did well in not giving out a NTC – could be good ammo in a trade.

> Eastern Conference Devon Toews
That would be nice

Re: Ellis’s LTIR status…there’s no good reason to spend money for the sake of spending it–a lesson the Flyers have been slow to learn. Dvorak was an overpay that for some reason reminds me of the Flyers signing Hayes. In the case of the latter, they overpaid because they knew Patrick wasn’t healthy. (So, the Hayes signing becomes another consequence of how much Hextall misplayed/misread drafting Patrick and trading Schenn…)
Back to the cap money–can be used to help facilitate another short-term trade and get something out of the deal (e.g. a prospect or draft capital), or fill an urgent gap at the deadline without worrying about cap space. Smart move, I guess, but I don’t want to see Briere making aggressive moves to stay mediocre.

AuthorThere is a huge difference between overpaying on a one-year deal, and overpaying on a seven-year deal. The old truism of “there’s no such thing as a bad one-year deal” isn’t QUITE 100% true, but it’s close. Hayes and Dvorak aren’t remotely comparable. The Flyers wanted a quality center who will ensure their talented young wings continue to develop offensively on schedule, rather than potentially having to play next to Rodrigo Abols for 50 games.
Richard Spooner
The entire NHL misread drafting Nolan Patrick, not just Hextall. I believe that if you were following things back then, you’d remember that.

I’m new to flyers fandom as of 2024. Ellis is never playing again? Is that right?
What is the disadvantage to LTIR, especially in the offseason?
Charlie O'Connor
AuthorYeah, Ellis is done. He can’t even skate anymore.
As for the disadvantages of using LTIR, it’s basically getting permission to exceed the cap. The problem is, you don’t bank cap space (which you can deploy to your benefit at the trade deadline if you banked it by staying under the cap ceiling the rest of the year) and it puts you at risk for end-of-season bonuses. They could potentially count against next year’s cap if you don’t have the space to account for them at the end of that specific season.

Awesome stuff on this and development camp, Charlie. I had a question, regarding Fedotov. Given that we need to bury him in the AHL to stay under the cap, what happens if we have an injury to either Ersson or Vladar? I imagine calling him up puts us over the cap, but wasn’t sure if avoiding LTIR and banking cap space alleviates any of that. Is the expectation that he’s going to live in the AHL and somebody else would have to be the guy who gets the call?

I think they will put Ellis on LTIR at the start of the year and bank that additional cap space. They should keep them comfortably under.

Very informative article with everything I would want to know and much more about the Cam York contract he just signed. One thing that I am confused about: how can a longer York contract be projected to cost more than a shorter term one? I thought it was the other way round…an example being the Dvorak contract.

“Fedotov buried” made me laugh.
