I couldn’t watch today’s game (a blessing, I guess) but if the team is constantly losing battles, being grossly outshot, and they rusty even six games in, it suggests that everyone except Michkov took it easy this offseason. If they knew they had Torts’ rope skate and tests waiting for them at camp, would they have done that? Tocchet needs to be less of a players’ coach if he’s gonna last.

It’s infeasible that an entire team of competitive, professional athletes didn’t train over the summer or needs 6+ games to get in shape. The ‘no fear of the rope’ excuse reeks of ‘kids don’t want to work hard these days’.

This is a coach that’s lost the room and players who are unmotivated to play boring, park-the-bus hockey

Tocchet is signed for five years. Five years! There’s no way they’re firing him, even though they should. They’re simply not going to eat $20 million in dead money.

Sunk cost.

The flyers annual revenue is $315M, $89M of which is from ticket sales. $20M in dead money is a drop in the bucket compared to major hits to ticket and merchandise sales.

Didn’t the team play much better once he simplified the system after the Olympic break last year, did they go away from those changes?

This is one way, perhaps the only way, to land a true young elite 1-C: Tank into the 2027 draft. Nobody wants to hear this but they are not going to win any cups, not even compete for a cup, unless they land a young top 1-C stud, superstar, and a 1-D stud. Free Agency will not get it done in a rising cap environment, and nobody is going to trade a young stud 1-C. So, has to happen in the draft, which means a top five pick. So, you know what, let ’em lose ’em all and lets get the pillars, then get a stud coach. Torts was a stud coach, but came before the pillars, and should have come after a tanking and acquisition of the pillars. That is on DB and Jonesy. So, let’s start all over again, start a rebuild from scratch, the right way this time.

Charlie, how long until you ask your colleagues from the Sixers beat to dust off their old tank pictures and send them your way?

Tochett is still trying to use a system that doesn’t align to the players he has. We have skilled players on the smaller side and he insists on sending them in to battle the boards against other team’s monster dmen.

We have the wrong coach for the players we have. Same as in Vancouver. Do we need to ruin our smaller skill guys like they did in Vancouver?

Eh, their big forwards are losing lots of battles too.

This game resembled the Penguins game more than any of the other previous games except that they did have offensive zone possession in this one. Your critique of this offensive system is accurate. I think that they should play more offensive to start the game and then once a lead is secured then and only then play defensive with an eye towards scoring if opportunities present themselves. They need to open it up, they are not scoring at all. The one Martone snipe was nice but any good scoring opportunity is either a wide shot or hitting a post ala Tippett. They are the most inaccurate team that I can remember. I agree that they just need to play harder and have some pride out there. At least then they can say they gave it their all and the results are what they are.

If you see a guy wearing a paper bag mask at the game today, that’s me.

I’m going to continue to cheer my team on, but I have the self-awareness to hide my face.

Before the injuries, I really didn’t think we would be in this place after 20 games. But, rutro—an infusion of low level AHL talent doesn’t seem like the cure. Crossing my fingers.

There is a growing stench coming from the Flyers locker room. So far none of the press covering the team has shed any real light on what is going on with this absolute change in character concerning this teams ability to compete, let alone win a game. What a departure from the end of last season.
I’m sorry, you say through the first four games you can’t fault Tochett & staff? Really? Tochett seems like a guy that is respected in the NHL, but even if that is true, there is no way that this mess that this season has now become is not squarely on their shoulders. One of the more accurate things you say in this article is that he and his staff have run one of the more ineffective preseason camps in recent memory. It seems that the sooner this team begins to start making some major changes, either in personnel or tactics, the better. Right now, about the only thing I want to do during a Flyers game is to check the score once in a while on my phone rather than sit through the pain of watching this nightly embarrassment take place as they fumble and bumble through another agonizing loss. It’s fair to ask if anyone in the organization has indicated that they have any clue how to begin to craft a solution to this nightmare of a start. Good luck selling tickets to this sh*t show.
