This was a GREAT game to watch (and really makes me miss playoff hockey).
Charlie, after your comment yesterday, i paid a bit more attention to carry ins vs dump ins – they did seem to have more of those this time. I think what made the difference was that they didnt spend most of their offensive possessions just around the boards but were able to bring the puck into the slot/center ice area and try from there.
One thing I’d like to see them clean up more – making lazy pass attempts. Several promising drives were cut short b/c of a lazy pass that had no hope of reaching its intended recipient.
Also, not sure if it is my imagination, but Andrae has seemed to pop more than York.

AuthorI think what it boils down to is that they create a fair amount of controlled entries that don’t feel like “rushes.” Because it’s not coming at a high pace and doesn’t have a numbers advantage.

Yeah – that is one, and the fact that a lot of their dump-in retrievals end up just staying on the peripheries before they lose the puck.
A game like yesterday, though – that’s a reminder why hockey was my favorite sport to watch on TV (something that tends to get forgotten in all this hand-wringing and pearl-clutching about tanking and rebuilds and all).

Here is what I find maddenig Charlie. You can roll out all the 5×5 and controlled entry gobbledygook stats you want it doesn’t mean squat if they don’t put the puck on net. Shoot the dam thing and HIT THE NET.
This team gains entry and the passing game becomes their signature. I imagine when the get back to the bench the conversation goes “oh man did you see that pass I made out to the point” and then it gets countered with “yeah but what about that cool one I made from behind the net”.
Give me a break. You know if they put the puck on net more maybe, just maybe they would get more than 3 goals a game or not lead the league in games going to OT.
Dan Vladar won this game plain and simple. Nothing else no matter what stats you want to trot out.
Noted hockey sage, Gary Dorhoefer once said “if you put the puck on net good things happen.”

I fully agree with your grade for this game. Both the Rangers and now the Bruins games have shown an obvious jump up in energy and confidence. Those qualities were undeniable right from the opening puck drop in this one. If they could only play like this more consistently, we would not be talking so much about how much ground needs to be made up to get into the playoffs, they would be right there in the mix. Let’s hope we see much more of this version of the Flyers.

Vladar was the star of the show as he has been for much of the season. I would hate to see where the Flyers would be without his stellar play this season. It would probably be a repeat of last season for sure. Drysdale is really coming around as a scorer now that his defensive game is in order. I wonder what his ceiling actually is as far as goals and points?
