Nice analysis, Charlie. For what it’s worth, Corey Pronman over at The Athletic gave the Flyers an A.

Fans seem somewhat divided. I’m much more in the excited camp, especially because of the Martone pick (Briere noted how players such as TK were texting him to express their excitement about it), but a handful of malcontents have been mashing their keyboards in anger, whining about how, in essence, Briere couldn’t dig up a 1C in Round 6. Regardless, I think the brain trust did their job this weekend. The team gets an infusion of depth at key positions, gets bigger, and gets a potential star.

Even if you don’t love the Nesbitt pick (I didn’t at first) other teams absolutely value him as a prospect. Maybe he can be a trade piece down the line. Teams love big centers. Maybe he develops into a legitimate 2C. They probably weren’t finding a stud top line center at pick 12. If he ends up being a bust in four years we still got Porter Martone at pick 6. That’s a huge win. I’m ok with them taking a shot at their guy.

Thanks for all your hard work Charlie and crew. I agree the Nesbit pick was just so disappointing as soon as I think we’re done with the Flyers front offices of old they go and take a limited center prospect with a high pick. I’m hoping you and I are both wrong on Nesbit but unfortunately the numbers are not looking good

Great work this weekend and all during this draft process by you and the rest of the crew. This has been invaluable info!

I’m good with the draft except for the Nesbitt pick. You don’t trade up to take projects that can’t skate. Not at 12. He has a better chance of being a bust than a 2C and Gard will be better. You nailed it with the panic pick. This is the one example I can think of where Danny and Jonesy panicked and lost their discipline. This draft would have been an A+ if they would have just selected Jackson Smith or Eklund with the 12th pick.

Fair grade and great assessments on each player, Charlie! I guess the swing pick is Nesbitt on how this draft will be looked at down the road. Who do you think will make it to the NHL after Martone since he is the most NHL ready of this class?

I think Vansaghi is the closest. Maybe 2026-27 if he has a good sophomore year.

To me, the best part of the entire Flyers draft was Briere not too subtly dumping on all the non hockey professionals who think they know more than the scouts. Doesn’t make really smart, knowledgeable people like Charlie wrong in all of his opinions, just adds a dose of reality to how the Flyers process works compared to most draftniks.

This draft, as pointed out here by Charlie, is a Flyers team identity redux. It’s taking the Torts hard-to-play-against agenda and adding steroids. These kids will help generate old time excitement in the Flyers fan base. We deserve it.

I don’t think Nesbitt was going to be there at 22 and if you get a legit 2C at pick 12 that’s gonna be good value. Your mostly likely option at 12 was going to be a 2C or middle pair D unless you’re taking a real swing, which they don’t absolutely HAVE to do at 12. Yes, they should take some swings but you need to balance that out with the need to field a cromulent team down the middle, which they are not as currently constructed.

All in all, I think it was a good weekend for the Flyers. While I was disappointed initially that we gave up the 2 other firsts to jump up to take Nesbitt, I can understand the logic better now. Let’s just not do anything stupid in FA.

I’m a casual getting back into the flyers, what’s a realistic projection for Shabanov if he comes over?

More grit and grinders and less focus on actual speed and skill. Typical Flyers draft. Martone seems like the right pick at 6 but then they make the cardinal sin of drafting a position and not the best prospect. They have so many needs they need to get the best players. A minus seems kind of generous when I read the write ups and rankings of the individual players, both here and elsewhere.
