If it’s 4 years no matter what, you probably move Walker/Konecny/Hart/Laughton in the next two years. But if he keeps up this pace and can find a way over to the NHL in two years, that’s a different calculus altogether.

For starters, the big swing on Matvei Michkov — who likely won’t come over to help for another couple seasons — was very much the kind of pick that a rebuilding team makes, with their eyes firmly focused on the future and not the present.

I’m not sure this is accurate. When Fletcher actually managed to hold on to his draft picks, they almost all were used for long term development (York, Brink, Gauthier…).

Drafting Michkov really wasn’t a change in draft strategy from the Fletcher regime.
