I’ve appreciated a lot of what Torts has done during his Flyers tenure, but with each passing day, I’m gaining a deeper understanding of why teams eventually burn out on him. I think he probably has one more year at the most before he’s no longer behind the bench.

Torts has to go. How can MM develop his immense ability under this dictator if he is benched after every mistake. Let the kid make mistakes, and gain experience and confidence. All Torts is good for with this group is to make sure they draft in no man’s land, the 15 to 20 area of the first round. He needs to move on, and Flyers should get a lesser quality coach who will a) develop MM by letting the kid play and b) land the team in the top 5 or top 10 of the draft for a couple of years to get the elite 1-C, 1-D, and Goalie a true rebuild needs and acquires first and foremost.
The good news is, in spite of Torts “system” win philosophy, Flyers are moving closer to high odds for a top 5 pick, so lose lose lose has to be the gameplan for the remainder of this dreadful season.

Charlie, I don’t know how you can stomach the way Torts treats you reporters. He has to go. Enough already with him.
You want a 1-C and know how to get one? DB and Jonesy need to learn. Leon Draisaitl is a stud 1-C acquired with a top five draft pick, # 3 selection in 2014. Big at 6’2”, 209 pounds. Exactly what a Stanley cup contender needs to have. He has 46 goals and 49 assists so far this year. Ya don’t find elite 1-C studs in the 15 to 30 area of the first round. Gotta get into the top 5 picks. Or how about their second line 1-C, Connor McDavid. Big strong kid, 24 goals and 57 assists with a quarter of the season left! Was he picked in the 15 to 30 area? Nope. First pick of the draft, a year after Draisaitl. Understand DB? Jonesy, are you looking at the draft analytics in preparing your rebuild strategic plan? Doesn’t seem like it. If you were, you would tank a couple of years in a row.
Based on what I am seeing, Flyer management is delusional, letting Torts lift this lousy roster into the 15 to 20 draft pick area. Flyers will never find a young big 1-C without tanking, or by being willing to trade too much, to pverpay, to get one in the top five picks of a draft. Why are Flyers holding onto Konecny and Risto? Trade them and a lot more if necessary to get into the top five. Flyers must be willing to overpay like they did to get Lindros. That trade worked. It kick-started a Flyers rebuild that was fabulous for fans for many years. You can always build around the edges, the wings, the second and third liners, but an elite 1-C is the critical step one for a rebuild. Konecny has no goals in the past 18 games. Is he one of DB’s pearls he is unwilling to trade in a package for a 1-C??? Why?
And this is why having Torts coach this weak roster to a near playoff spot and a pick in the 15 to 20 range is bad strategy for a rebuild team. Wrong coach. Flyers must move into the top 5 of the next couple of drafts if this rebuild is ever going to get off the ground. Time to get real, Jonesy. As Prez, you are responsible for the strategic plan. Time to get real.

The fact that you think McDavid, the best player in the world, is the Oilers 2nd line C tells me all I need to know about the rest of your rant. Which you seem to be obsessed with providing in various formats on every article. Relax man, there’s no McJesus or Drai in this upcoming draft. And stud goalies are rarely drafted in the 1st round anymore. They have several legitimate 1G prospects in the system playing overseas. It’s true they need a 1C and 1D to continue the rebuild but the history of the draft is littered with potential 1C/1D prospects that have never panned out.

You realize that Tortorella is the coach right now and it’s quite likely that the Flyers will be picking in the top 5 this draft, right? If the season ended today they’d have the 7th best odds of getting the he first overall pick and if they keep playing this way, which is likely considering they have a forward group half made up of AHLers, they’ll easily slip into the bottom 5 of the league. Who knows if they’ll be better next year but as of now you’re “picking in the 15-20 range” argument is out of date.

I thought the team misfired on a lot of passes against the Devils – the structure was solid but the execution was just a tad off.

As for Torts – i have never coached NHL pros and have no idea what the correct way to do it is, so I don’t have an opinion. That said, to me, his irascibility during press conferences shouldn’t be a factor in evaluating his coaching. It isn’t as if the Philly media at large – Marcus Hayes et al – are a collection of Pulitzer winning journalists anyway.
