This is a critical moment in the Flyers rebuild. They have a great opportunity to land a 1-C, or 1-D in this coming draft. But, they have to lose the last game to get their best odds. It really is a big difference between drafting at # 4 and at # 7, given this year’s top prospects. The GM has to make sure they lose the last game. How? DB has to figure that out. IR a bunch of stars? Or IR a couple of their best D-men which worked well when Torts lost a game by benching York, leaving the D-men short-handed. Huge game Thursday. Gotta lose it. One of the hardest things to acquire in the NHL is a 1-C, a 1-D, or a 1-G. Flyers have none of these key players, none in the prospect pool. DB has to seize the moment, as a great chance to fill one of these spots at the coming draft — if they lose Thursday, as their odds for the first pick rise substantially.

This is hilarious. What zeal for losing. It’s probably the right mindset, but it’s just a silly state of affairs in pro sports when talking is the right move.

Tanking*

You are right, and I think it may be a function of having too many teams. Talent is spread way too thin, but money drives sports, so it is what it is, and tanking into the top 5 of every draft for three years is truly one of the few options to build a roster capable of winning a cup, given how wide talent is spread these days.

Perhaps they should put Andrae in Goal for this last game, or maybe put Brink in goal. Maybe they could then lose 10 to 3 or something. DB needs to get real, get creative to make sure this loss happens.

Just lose, baby.

This season has been even more disappointing than recent previous seasons based on how the team played last year. The fact that they just missed the playoffs last year, led many to believe this year would be the year they break through. You mention that the Jackets were desperate and played like it, however, last year this dismal bunch managed to lose 10 in a row to miss what should have been a sure playoff spot. Where was the desperation then? I don’t care what anyone says, following this lifeless team is getting real old. This is such a pivotal off season, and they better get it right. Between the many draft picks and the upcoming choice of a new coach. If they mess this up, I’ve about had enough and I think many others feel the same way as well. I, unfortunately, was at this game. It was amazing to see how many people were there considering how awful this team is. That does not lend itself to a situation that leads management to “get it right or else” This “New era of Orange” better start soon or else we are in for more of the same mediocre finishes we’ve seen in recent years.

Well said.

I still agree with the premise of the Torts experience. I’m no pro athlete, but I had a toxic boss for a few years who taught me quite a bit about handling a job in a professional setting. He was a jerk, and I still dislike him, but I inevitably learned quite a bit. These guys are pro athletes, they should be fine in the long run. The franchise needed a reset and they were fortunate to have lucked into hiring someone who wasn’t afraid to call them out.
