Charlie and Bill, Great game, but after listening to your podcast, I feel the need to correct something that I don’t think many people know, including me until my buddy showed me the NHL rule. The game winning goal was Sanheim’s because the Flyers did not relinquish the lead after the goal was scored, kind of like the pitcher getting a win if the team doesn’t give up a lead after the 5th inning. So Sanheim had the game winner, even though Martone’s goal was the game deciding goal.
Jake Kurz
that’s incorrect. The GWG is the goal that puts them one goal ahead of the opponent. if the final score is 5-3, it’s whoever scored the 4th goal.
Ben Fellows
It seems like half of the people referring to the GWG are following one rule and half the other. I truly have no idea which is correct. NHL & ESPN websites currently crediting Martone with the GWG, but every interview last night was saying Risto had the assist on the GWG (Sanheim).
Charlie O'Connor
AuthorMy understanding is that the NHL credits the Martone goal rather than the Sanheim goal as the GWG. So that’s what I go with. I do believe the Sanheim goal was the most IMPORTANT goal, though.

Agreed. Both goals were obviously necessary for the win, Sanheim’s goal was the most impactful and impressive but that takes nothing away from Martone’s eventual game winner. 🏒

Is Martone going to be the best home grown Flyer since Lindros???
Vandit Kalia
He’s ahead of German Rubstov already, so that’s promising.

What a game, who knew that the Flyers were that ready to take it to the Pens? We Flyers fans did. Watching the last month or so you could see a different team took the ice, one that was capable of beating any team and adapting to any type of game. The Flyers were the better team by far and if they had capitalized on more of their chances the score would have shown this. I really appreciate the honest account of the game, Charlie, well done! Do you expect the Flyers to make any changes heading into Game 2 or do they simply play the same game until the Pens can beat them?
