Great breakdown, Charlie. I really like the trade, and it’s one that could be a good one for both teams. And it shows Danny is always cooking.

But, thank GAWD we no longer have to worry about Ersson.

First off, “Andrae, in short,” great job playing to Jonesy there. I think it’s a solid move & it is the start of hoping Briere picks the right guys long term. They have a lot of youth so dealing some guys that fit the timeline needs to happen. I’m hopeful Woll is the upgrade they think he will be.

Woll is listed as 6’3″ and 212 lbs, while Vladar is listed at 6’5″ and 209 lbs…can’t believe that Bill (on the pod) didn’t mention the possibility of goalie fights! Haha. Great job, as usual.

In addition to your excellent points in the article, I’ll add that there is zero downside to adding Benoit. You covered best case, but worst case is he gets waived and then is claimed or sent to the Phantoms.

This is another of Briere’s boring moves. He gets rid of players who don’t fit and replaces them with players with upside potential. Players who don’t fit rarely have value. So, this is solid work by Briere—as is usually the case. One of his best trades ever was shipping Frosty and Beezer to Calgary. We got cap space, a look at two interesting return players, and spots for Zegras and Dvorak.

Don’t hold onto players who don’t fit.

Eh, I disagree there. Worst-case is that the coach decides he’s good and plays him 60+ games and he continues to put up ghastly underlying metrics in those minutes and tanks his pair.

Well… That’s possible v. likely, right?

It’s possible that Tocchet/Benoit winds up like Hakstol/Andy Mac. But, it’s not likely from where I sit.

Oliver Bonk plays 60 games on a broken leg before Benoit plays 60 games for us!

Jones would take Tocchet out for a beer and some hockey advice no later than game 30…

“ the Flyers would allow a whopping 22 fewer goals than they did this season. For reference, that would have moved the Flyers to second in the entire NHL last season”

That is bonkers.

Also, I think elsewhere others have pointed out the tendency for Benoit to chase hits was something that Risto did early in his career and was corrected to great effect from RR. Just getting an effective 7th out of Benoit that is an upgrade over last year would be fine.

I was already sold on Woll and the need to upgrade our backup netminder and feel even more so after reading this article. Good arguments for shipping out Ersson & Andrae, even if there was still some untapped potential. Ersson could never thrive in the spotlight and only shined in a backup role when it wasn’t all in him. He was a good locker room guy but there are enough of those already and the players were too attached to see the need to replace him. The offseason is indeed off to a good start shoring up one of our biggest needs.
