No worse way to find your way in the NHL than getting yanked into and out of the lineup every other game. Just guarantees there’s no consistency, no chemistry with your defensive partner, and no chance to relax and focus on hockey.

This is not “looking to the future”.

Honestly disagree. As long as the prospects are getting regular playing time — a few games a week — I don’t think it’s going to hurt them at all to have 3-5 day gaps between games rather than 1-3.

Is this some new development theory charlie? Cuz all I can remember is organizations saying they weren’t going to call a Prospect up until he could stay in the lineup every night cuz they weren’t going to jerk them in and out of the lineup

I mean, all development in truth is an inexact science. There’s no real way to PROVE what works and what doesn’t. I don’t know who’s right and who’s wrong, really.

My personal view is that it doesn’t help a guy develop to sit at the NHL level for an extended period of time. I’d rather have him down in the minors. But as long as the sitting periods aren’t extended, a rotation makes sense to me. Kids get playing time, team is more effective on a game-by-game basis by not supporting the still-developing younger guys with too many mistake-prone rookies, and the short-term vets don’t see their future trade values tanked by getting tagged as healthy scratch-level players.

I hear you. I think consistency is really important in developing any skill, and alternating games makes that tough.

But my main concern is that I think getting in the lineup is an adjustment period (to the league, to your linemates/partner,etc) and you have to get over that adjustment period before you can continue developing.

Like, if Andrae gets the puck in a corner with his back to the play, he needs to have adjusted his internal clock to when a forechecker will be on him, and where to expect his partner to be.

Only after he is comfortable unconsciously knowing those answers can he work on his first instinct of what to do with the puck now.

And so having Seeler alternate partners means that chemistry won’t develop where Andrae knows where Seeler will be.

It’s just resetting part of the development progress every single game and making it harder to accomplish.

And that’s without getting into the psychology of it all, the confidence that even if you make a mistake you’ll still be in the lineup for the next game.

Glad to see Brink is looking good after the surgery and then alright AHL season. Really looks like one of the few prospects that have creativity with the puck. Only thing I disagree with Torts so far is benching Zamula. With the couple games he played he looks like a viable defenseman. If you want to put in Andrae, substitute Seeler or Staal out.
