Excellent article. Love the deep analysis. Can I ask a stupid question? On the assist charts, where is MM positioned? Is he at the dot sending the puck in the direction of the line or is he at the unterminated end of the line and the target is at the dot?
Alex Appleyard
At the dot! And thanks, appreciate it.

Thanks for part two! Love the details and am excited for what he may become.
Alex Appleyard
You and me both! And much appreciated… thanks!

Love these sorts of articles! Thank you.
I have always wondered how NHL coaching “systems” work. In football, each play is very clearly defined with specific routes, responsibilities, etc. In a more free-flowing sport like hockey, a lot of coaching systems seem to be more about specific philosophies/principles (gaps, defensive responsibilities, style of forecheck, etc), with the players left to execute within the confines of those principles.
So any articles that get into the nuts and bolts of this are always welcomed.

Thanks right back at you!
Always enjoy writing these kind of pieces. Will try and deliver more with tactical/play based breakdowns in not so distant future.
