I wonder how much of the discrepancy between 5-on-5 and PP/OT success can be correlated to the difference between international and NHL rink sizes? One would assume that at least his OT success can be somewhat explained by his comfort in space that more closely matches his previous experience.

Excellent article.

One point I see a lot is that young players are poor with corsi against because they don’t know how to play defense… I think it has more to do with their physical maturation and strength, showing up on the boards, puck possession skills, etc. They lose the puck during physical exchanges, and get stuck in the D zone as some bigger stronger players hold pucks, forehead well, spend more time on O, get more shots.

Loved the article. One thing that gives even more hope for greatness is that he is working through a language and cultural barrier, but doing so pretty quickly, it seems.

Great work, Daniel. The variance between Corsi and xG rates make sense based on his playing style (generating high quality offensive chances)… but are there any other players in the NHL that have that large of a delta in the two stats?

Hi Bobby. Thanks! It’s fairly rare this year. The only players (as of a few days ago) who are under 48% CF% but above 52% xGF% are:
Christian Dvorak
Cole Koepke
Cole Schwindt
Erik Haula
Matvei Michkov
Nick Foligno
Owen Tippett

Basically this reminds me that nolan Patrick was a good player until the head stuff. Tough break for the flyers.
