As the Lehigh Valley Phantoms sit on the precipice of the start of their 2026-27 season — their season opener is Saturday against the Hartford Wolf Pack — the magnitude of the moment looms large.
Coming off of a season where expectations were high, and a team loaded with prospects and high-end skill was hopeful to make a deeper run into the playoffs, the second half skid that befell them on the way to a postseason miss made for quite a major disappointment.
The organization, though, seemed discontent to rest on the laurels of any positives pulled together through this season, and put in some major work over the offseason to cut ties with a good number of players seemingly deemed fringe or outside of their plans, and to identify a new group that can better adhere to their system and form a more cohesive unit.
The tenor of the team is looking quite different this year, but will this reshaping ultimately be enough to push them into the next phase in their team development?
