First off, awesome job with this!
Second how did you decide on NR as the measuring stick? I know Dom is well liked within the field, but it is also a newer metric with no real track record. Were there any other metrics you considered instead?
Daniel Bompadre
Hi jcheim, thanks! Appreciate it.
Net Rating has its issues, no doubt. GSVA has a pretty decent track record and NR is very close to GSVA in how it functions.
The first time I ran this I ended up using WAR like I did with the goaltenders. However, WAR is pretty funky with what it can spit out. For instance, Travis Sanheim is in the 20%ile in WAR because he had a disappointing 22-23. I don’t think that’s very close to reality, whereas Dom had him in the 77%ile range over the same time period, which passes the smell check for me.
For me, WAR might be a bit closer to “what they actually did…” and NR is closer to “…but this is what they are as a player.”
