How much does quality of competition play a role? Higher competition plus playing in his worse position along with pressing might explain it

If the room can’t withstand the loss of Laughton then it wasn’t strong to begin with. Assuming he rebounds and has a normal Laughton season and you get decent offers for him at the deadline then you need to trade him.

Correct. They have been a losing franchise with him, they can be a losing franchise without him. The whole culture bit is old and tiresome. Shame on them for not trading him last year, especially if the rumors of a first-round pick were true.

Briere must figure out how to find a couple of elite talents to be tentpoles for the next Flyers team capable of being a cup contender. Michkov is fine at wing. Briere must get an elite superstar 1-C and an elite superstar 1-D. That means trading second line “pearls” and winning a couple of trades. Without a tank, those two key players are not coming from the draft, where they will be picking 15 to 30 for years to come. Almost making the playoffs or just barely making them is not the way to get elite player talent. That is their future at this time. It could be like the Giroux years. One superstar that is great, but maybe not elite, with medicre around him. Sub Michkov for “G” and nothing has changed in over a decade. This GM better get creative, and aggressive to find elite talent. Laughton is nice to have around, but culture only gets us so far.
