For a season that saw Travis Konecny ultimately deliver his normal results and continue his role as the Philadelphia Flyers‘ leading scorer, Konecny’s 2025-26 campaign seemed oddly tumultuous.
That certainly wasn’t the case behind closed doors, where Konecny remained a key team leader and mentor to the team’s many young players. But as comes with the territory of being a club’s highest-paid player, outside scrutiny dogged Konecny. Konecny has always been and will always be an extremely noticeable player — both when he is playing his best, and when his production slips. From his early-season goal issues to his midseason surge to his underwhelming production in the playoffs, the spotlight rarely lacked glare when it came to Konecny.
Travis Konecny isn’t going anywhere — both his contract (lasting through 2033 and complete with a full no-movement clause) and his integral role both on and off the ice for the club ensure that. But Konecny also does turn 30 in March of 2027, and the Flyers are in the midst of a youth movement. His place as the integral piece is not guaranteed in perpetuity. He’ll need to continue to earn that role, regardless of his track record and current place of seniority, especially as the next generation of Flyers forwards (hopefully) continues to progress.
And if Konecny’s role does start to diminish a touch, it might not even be a bad thing for Konecny — and the Flyers.

Awesome stuff Charlie. The insights into some of the shortcomings of the advanced metric is really interesting.
I’m curious if you think the Flyers would be better off just balancing their top 3 lines minutes a bit more? It’s not as if they have clear cut must have 20 minutes a night guys (at least not yet) but they do have a ton of really good depth. Would going into games planning for the top 3 lines to play 16ish minutes and adjust based on play be out of bounds?

Honestly, there is something to this, with the caveat that Tocc goes with the hot hand on a given night (which he has shown he likes to do). The way the lineup is right now “top line” may be better served via more matchup based than names slotted.

I’m all for this. Their greatest strength is solid depth and—I’m hoping that a few of the younger guys punch up into top line production this year—could make it a real headache for teams to match lines.

I was always in favor of some other team paying him for his 30’s. But, Briere signed him, TK became a captain-material locker room guy, and he has proven that he’s likely to be a decently valued top 6 piece for a reasonably long majority of his contract. Nothing not to like, and not a problem that has to be solved. Love to see what he can do on a stronger team as we continue the rebuild.

Solid article with some great considerations regarding TK’s future role on the team and in the lineup. Personally, I view TK as a streaky player like Tippett. I would move him down to the second line and Tip down to the third line. This strategy worked with Coots and I believe it will work for both of these players as more minutes for each do not necessarily translate into more points. I would like both Martone & Michkov to benefit from more minutes and move up in the lineup. These are players that with more minutes will produce more. Good stuff!

It’s really a shame we don’t get this level of effort from the other beats on this site. Sixers writers haven’t posted a single article since the perfunctory article announcing the LBJ signing. I can’t be the only DH that feels like I’m basically paying a yearly subscription for Charlie at this point.

Charlie as you were describing Travis’s defensive shortcomings it made me think a lot about Michkov.
Others have stated at elsewhere re: MM. The goal is not to limit his offensive upside, but to close the gap between his defensive liabilities, so the gap between his offensive production and defensive shortcomings becomes lesser.
Seems like TK has a good grasp of that balance.
