LANDOVER, Md. — Jalen Hurts suffered a concussion in the first quarter of Sunday’s Eagles-Commanders game. Kenny Pickett took over at quarterback.
Hurts was hit in the head with the helmet of Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu on a rush attempt in the Eagles’ second drive. Hurts was on the turf for a few moments, stood up and tried staying in the game. An official directed him to the sideline. Hurts pushed to stay in the game, even going back to the huddle. The official made him get evaluated.
After he was evaluated by the medical and training staff in the blue medical tent, Hurts returned to the sideline and put his helmet on, appearing ready to play. That’s when head trainer Tom Hunkele pulled him back and made him return to the tent.
During this period, Pickett threw a touchdown to A.J. Brown.
Hurts came out of the tent and jogged to the locker room. He was not helped off the field and was even jogging ahead of the training staff. But inside the locker room, a determination was made that Hurts suffered a concussion. He did not return to the sideline.
This is Hurts’ first documented concussion with the Eagles. He was evaluated for a concussion in the game against the Commanders last month, but he passed the protocol and returned to the game.
