Philadelphia Union midfielder Leon Flach made the move to MLS needing a spark in his club career and after spending the last three seasons in the United States, the young midfielder is reportedly attracting interest in his native Germany.
Bundesliga side Werder Bremen is reportedly interested in acquiring Flach during the upcoming January Transfer window, 90 min reported Thursday. Bremen’s representatives originally expressed interest in Flach last summer and are rekindling their interest this winter.
A Texas native, Flach moved to Germany in 2008 and featured for Sereetz and Lubeck before joining FC St. Pauli’s academy in 2016. After working his way through St. Pauli’s youth teams, Flach debuted for the first team in 2020.
He made nine appearances in the 2. Bundesliga, scoring one goal and totaling 110 minutes of action.
Flach jumped right into Jim Curtin’s squad in 2021 and has proceeded to log over 100 appearances for the Union in three seasons. He’s contributed three goals and seven assists, featuring on the left side of Curtin’s midfield, as well as a left back option.
He previously has featured for Germany’s Under-18 and the United States Under-20 national teams, but has yet to earn a senior cap for either country. Flach was on Gregg Berhalter’s radar ahead of the USMNT’s 2021 Gold Cup involvement.
Werder Bremen sit 13th in the German top-flight, earning 16 points in 16 appearances so far this season.
The Union open their 2024 schedule in February against Deportivo Saprissa in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
