Phillies pitchers dominate in win over Yankees

Phillies pitchers held the Yankees to just one hit in a 4-0 win at BayCare ballpark on Sunday. The Yanks left their big-name hitters at their home stadium and sent their B-team to Clearwater, but the Phils’ performance was impressive nonetheless.

Here’s a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly from this afternoon’s game:

The Good

  • Aaron Nola looked every bit the pitcher who landed a seven-year, $172 million deal this offseason. Nola threw two innings, struck out three, and didn’t allow a baserunner.
  • Matt Strahm followed Nola with a clean inning of his own, striking out two.
  • Jeff Hoffman threw a 1-2-3 fourth inning. The Yankees got their first baserunner of the game against Jose Alvarado in the fifth, but failed to do any damage.
  • Mick Abel looked sharp after replacing Alvarado. The 22-year-old righthander struck out two of the three batters he faced. His fastball sat between 94 and 96 mph and both of the strikeouts came on sliders.
  • Seranthony Dominguez threw a clean seventh inning.
  • Austin Brice struck out the side in the ninth to end the game. The Phillies signed the 31-year-old righthander to a minor league deal just a week ago.
  • Cristian Pache picked up an RBI single and hit a solo home run in his two at-bats.
  • Garrett Stubbs hit an RBI single in the second inning and walked in his only other plate appearance.
  • Jake Cave made a nice diving catch in the third inning.

The Bad

  • Gregory Soto didn’t allow a run in his eighth-inning appearance, but he walked a batter and served up the Yankees’ only hit.
  • While New York’s offensive ineptitude was the story of the game, the Phillies didn’t hit well either. Aside from Pache’s home run, the Fightins were limited to five singles. (They also walked four times.)
  • The biggest stars in the Phils’ lineup–Trea Turner, Bryson Stott, Nick Castellanos, and Kyle Schwarber–combined to go one for eleven at the plate. Castellanos had the lone hit, and Turner was the only member of that group to draw a walk.

The Ugly

  • Yankees infielder Oswald Peraza commited two errors in the game. The Phils scored a run on this dropped pop-up.

The Phillies will be in Fort Myers, FL on Monday and Tuesday for games against the Red Sox and Twins.
