It was just like old times, and yet, it also was not.
The Flyers introduced Rick Tocchet as the franchise’s 25th head coach on Friday, with former Flyers Keith Jones and Daniel Briere flanking the all-time penalty-minute leader for the orange and black. But nobody talked much about toughness or “old-time hockey.” I did not hear the words “dump and chase.”
Instead, I heard a lot about developing young talent. “I’m a partner with the players. It’s not a dictatorship,” Tocchet, 61, said at one point. Asked about 20-year-old franchise forward Matvei Michkov, Tocchet said he wanted to “learn from him and help him.”
