Two days before the start of Philadelphia Flyers training camp, Flyers GM Daniel Briere confirmed that the team had indeed terminated the contract of Ryan Johansen for a "material breach" back on August 21, a day after they had placed him on unconditional waivers for that purpose.
On Thursday, the other shoe dropped -- Johansen and the NHLPA are fighting back.
The NHL Players Association announced that they will indeed be filing a grievance to contest the Flyers' termination of the final year of Johansen's contract; they had 60 days after the termination to do so. The dispute, in other words, will not be going quietly into the night.
