Salisbury: Rafael Marchan hopes this is the year he “checks in” with Phillies and “checks out” of hotels

Rafael Marchan hasn’t been in the Phillies organization forever, but it sure seems that way.
He was just 16 when he signed with the club out of Venezuela a decade ago, just 17 when he first came to the United States to play in the minor leagues.
Back then, he barely spoke enough English to fill a catcher’s mitt.
Now?
Perfecto.
He’s had some interesting tutors.
“Being around the American players has helped me a lot,” he said. “And TV shows. I’ve learned a lot from TV shows. I really like Grey’s Anatomy. It’s a long, long series. I watch it every day.”
Over the years, Marchan’s English lessons have also had a little Philly flavor.
