The U.S. Under-17 men’s national team saw its run at the FIFA U-17 World Cup come to an end on Tuesday, but Philadelphia Union prospect David Vazquez enjoyed an unforgettable moment in the process.

Vazquez scored his first World Cup goal in the U.S.’ 3-2 Round of 16 loss to Germany. Despite the Americans’ best efforts, an 84th minute winning goal for the Germans sealed their advancement to the quarterfinal round and eliminated the U.S.

The 17-year-old’s low free kick from the right wing in the 80th minute snuck into the bottom-left corner, giving the United States its second tying goal of the match. After entering the match in the 60th minute, Vazquez didn’t need long to make an impact for Gonzalo Segares’ squad.

The USMNT U-17’s won two of its four matches in Indonesia, defeating South Korea and Burkina Faso in the group stage.

At club level, Vazquez scored five goals and registered two assists in 22 appearances for Philadelphia Union II in MLS NEXT Pro this past season. He helped Marlon LeBlanc’s squad reach the MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs after finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference.

Vazquez will be a Union player to watch heading into 2024 after a positive end to his 2023 schedule.
