One of MLS’ top free agents is returning to Philadelphia.
Kai Wagner signed a new, multi-year contract through the 2026 MLS season, the Union announced Thursday. Wagner’s contract also includes an option for 2027, ending speculation about his immediate club future.
“Kai has proven himself year after year as one of the best left backs in the league, and an integral part of our team success,” said Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner. “With his consistent defending and aggressive attacking style of play, he has greatly contributed to the new milestones the team has achieved every year, and we have full confidence his continued dedication and passion for this club will continue help us reach new heights. We’re looking forward to having Kai in Philadelphia for years to come.”
2024 will mark Wagner’s sixth season with the Union after joining from German side Wurzburger Kickers in 2019. He has made 138 appearances to date for Philadelphia, registering 39 assists, which are the most by a defender in league play since 2019.
Wagner has been one of the league’s top left backs since arriving in the United States, helping the Union reach the playoffs in all of his previous five seasons. The Union have lifted one Supporters’ Shield and one Eastern Conference Championship during Wagner’s time with the club.
“I’ve been here for almost five years now and continue to grow professionally and personally,” Wagner said. “I feel highly valued here and have a great bond with the club. My family and I also feel extremely at home here. Despite other exciting options in Europe, I decided to extend my contract with the Philadelphia Union because in the end my heart also played a part in my decision.”
The Union open their 2024 competitive schedule in February against Deportivo Saprissa in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
