Chris Donovan’s future will be with the Philadelphia Union.
The 23-year-old signed a new contract with the Union through 2025, which includes club options for 2026 and 2027. Donovan, a Paoli-born forward, excelled collegiately at Drexel University before signing with Philadelphia Union II in February 2022.
In the 2023 MLS Cup playoffs, Donovan scored the game-winning goal against the New England Revolution that secured the Union their spot in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Donovan made 18 appearances this past regular season, scoring one goal and adding one assist. Additionally, Donovan is one of just two players on the team to score in four different competitions in 2023; the MLS Regular Season, U.S. Open Cup, Leagues Cup, and MLS Cup Playoffs.
“Throughout his time with the Union, Chris has capitalized on every opportunity given and has played an important role in games of consequence,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner. “He is committed to furthering his development which is evident by the impressive strides he’s made over the last two years, especially in this past season. We look forward to his continued contributions in the years to come.”
Donovan also heavily contributed to Union II this past MLS NEXT Pro season, scoring six goals, and registering three assists in 11 appearances. He helped Marlon LeBlanc’s squad qualify for the league playoffs for the second-straight season.
The Union’s opening match of 2024 will come against Deportivo Saprissa in the newly-revamped CONCACAF Champions Cup tournament next February.
